- Key date: Announced 13 October 2026 at Workday Rising, Las Vegas
- Status: Accounting Agent for early adopters in early 2027; Sana in Claude plugin in early access, general availability expected in late 2026; C1.ai deal expected to close by 31 January 2027
The Accounting Agent
- When a customer contract is signed, it extracts key terms, prepares entries and recommends revenue recognition and billing schedules.
- It tests transactions continuously in the background, flags issues and gives guidance to the audit team.
- Workday says accounting staff remain responsible for review and decisions.
- Every agent action is logged: what it did, what information it used and who approved it.
Claude and Workday
- Claude and Sana exchange tasks through the Model Context Protocol, an open standard.
- Example given by Workday: a finance leader checks invoice exceptions against purchase orders, then approves them in Claude or routes them to Sana.
- Claude shows only what the user is permitted to see, and data stays in Workday.
- Anthropic runs its own finance and people operations on Workday.
Agent identity
- C1.ai grants access to systems, including finance systems, when needed and removes it afterwards, with human approval and a record of every action.
- Workday cites C1.ai research that 95% of large United States companies already run autonomous agents, and Deloitte research that only 21% have a mature way to govern them.
- Price not disclosed. Workday sells AI through Flex Credits and has not published a credit cost per agent.
What to do now
- Ask Workday when the Accounting Agent reaches you, and what it costs in credits.
- Decide which steps the agent may complete alone and which need approval.
- Before connecting Claude or any assistant, review Workday security roles; the assistant inherits them.
- Confirm that agent logs can be exported for internal and external audit.
Our take
The pattern is now clear across SAP, Google and Workday: agents inside the system of record, with permissions and logs inherited from it. That is good for control. The open question is cost, because credit-based pricing makes the business case hard to model. Ask for numbers before the pilot.
